3 Prayers to Pray During the Election

Because it’s election season here in the United States, I thought I’d share the following prayer I composed for the election:

Lord God, Almighty Father: Watch over our nation in these times. Casting a ballot is a privilege given to us by our Constitution and secured for us by citizens and patriots, past and present. May we exercise this freedom with the heart of a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. Grant that our Government will serve Your purposes under heaven. Unite our country, protect our sacred liberties and rights, and defend us from every evil. Strengthen our country as a foundation of moral clarity and civic unity, according to your great plan. All of this, Father, grant this by the power of your Holy Spirit and in the Name of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Prince, and our Everlasting King. Amen.

If you’re looking for other prayers to pray during the election, let me draw your attention to the following prayers from the “Occasional Prayers” section to be featured in the upcoming ACNA Prayer Book.

For an Election

Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide and direct, we humbly pray, the minds of all those who are called to elect fit persons to serve [in ________]. Grant that in the exercise of our choice we may promote your glory, and the welfare of this nation. This we ask for the sake of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

For the United States of America

Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure conduct. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

You can find these and other prayers–including prayers especially appropriate for those in Canada, Mexico, and other countries–in the ACNA’s Texts for Common Worship. Click that link, and then scroll down until you see the “Collects and Occasional Prayers” section.
